Meet The Makers

Anseong Daejanggan - South Korea

In the South Korea city Anseong, known for its iron, brass, and stone tool making, a blacksmith shop run by Master Shin In-young produces a collection of hand-forged kitchen knives in the traditional style of the region. Sharp and hard carbon steel blades with dark, forged finishes combine with handles of hickory and chestnut wood with forged steel rings to offer a simple, rustic and handy knife for all variety of cooking. Founded in 1845, the Shin Blacksmith shop is now run by the 5th generation of the family, the first individual to be named an Intangible Cultural Heritage Treasure by the Gyonggi Province. Teaching often, Master Shin is dedicated to ensuring his craft's future by passing his experience down to new generations.

Master Shin is the only craftsperson in Korea authorized to produce traditional Korean steel and has been involved in projects around the country, including in the restoration of "National Treasure #1," the main gate to Old Seoul.
