Silver Spring French Utility 160mm

Bladesmith Don Carlos Andrade crafted this striking and very special culinary object in collaboration with Arizona-based artist Bill Rice. Timeless and unique in design, the knife’s form is inspired by Don’s admiration for vintage French Sabatier knives and Alsatian regional knifemaking. With his deep knowledge and experience with chef knife geometry and world-class kitchen utility, informed by decades of sculpting and knifemaking as well as formal culinary training, Don hand-forged the blade from W2 carbon steel which he then hardened, etched and polished to produce the exquisite two-tone finish. The handle, made from vintage Westinghouse red chocolate micarta, closely matches the patterns found in Alsace utility knives of past centuries. After completing his work, Don sent the knife to Bill who elevated the knife to nothing short of a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art with his mastery of engraving and silver sculpting. Bill engraved a flower on each side of the blade, then added a fine silver inlay to the flower’s center. This knife is where timeless design, contemporary approach to materials, and fine. artisanal hand-craft merge in the form of a cooking tool.
