Tahitian Zebra Kiritsuke 235mm
There is nothing ordinary about this kiritsuke chef knife by Salem Straub. Perhaps most striking in this one-of-a-kind build is the elongated combination of blade tang and integral bolster which, in addition to looking fantastic, offers extra reach and opportunity for a variety of grips, a welcome feature in a relatively heavy knife that balances beautifully just at the blade's heel. With an heirloom fit, the octagonal bolster extends in to a matching wa-style handle in exquisite ringed gidgee wood from Australia. At the handle's end, a flush, steel blade tang screw is visible. The blade features Salem's usual compound bevel geometry, concave from the spine downward, then becoming convex for the final distance to the razor-sharp edge. Tahitian Zebra pattern mosaic damascus steel, designed and created in house by Salem, gives the knife its name.

The Story
A self-taught blacksmith who began shaping metal with a charcoal forge and hand tools at the age of twenty, Salem Straub of Promethean Knives more recently won the 2nd season of the History Channel's Forged in Fire. Honing his techniques and studying the nuances of bladesmithing, Salem's well-rounded metalworking and blacksmithing abilities have been focused squarly on edged tools since 2012. The sole-authorship nature of each tool he builds is key for Salem, providing opportunity for attention to the subtlest details, often resulting in objects that blend the line between art and function. Forging his own mosaic damascus, building integral construction handles, heat treating in house and designing each minutia of each knife, it's an honor to present Salem's work here on Eatingtools.
