Kayak Spoon + DogLeg Knife

Carved by hand outdoors using traditional techniques that rely on an axe and knife only, this uniquely striking spoon and knife set is as at home beside the camp fire as on the breakfast table. With his wabi-sabi finish with two-tone acrylic paint motif on the handles, artist Maximilian Neukäufler of Austria's Woodman's Finest carbonizes the wood for protection from the elements, giving it the final dark, smokey aesthetic we love. The Kayak Spoon, unusual and wonderfully functional, is inspired by both the sensibilities and design of Japan where Maximilian has studied craft tirelessly, as well as Eastern artifacts he witnessed while researching the anthropology of North America. To complement the comfortable and versatile spoon is his DogLeg spreader design, part outdoor knife, as sharp as one would want a wooden blade to be without sacrificing strength, perfect for parting soft vegetables or even tender meat, is just as functional and welcomed in the dining room as a spreader for cheeses, jams, and sauces. A limited number of are available.

The Story

Maximilian Neukäufler is Woodman's Finest, and Woodman's Finest in Maximillian, in every sense. From an early age Max sought out nature in its purest forms, enjoying both solitude and the oneness with the Earth, as well as activities, both solo and group-based, that rely on the natural world as backdrop. From hunting, to fishing, to boating, archery, foraging, camping, wood carving, teaching, and the rest, Maximillian's journey, including extensive travels the world over, have imbued him with an uncanny ability to harness what nature provides us, in a thoughtful, sustainable, unassuming way. Born in Innsbruck, Austria, Maximillian today focuses his many talents on the design and creation of wood and leather objects for the outdoors, as well as the design of carving and other tools that make his woodworking and leatherwork possible.
